How Do Dreams Come True?

Who do you know who has achieved their dreams? Whenever I think about the people who have gotten what they wanted - who have seen their dreams come true - it is clear that the reason they have achieved their dreams is because they have worked hard. Their dream is really a hard-earned goal achieved. Sure, luck can be a factor. Sometimes we meet the right person at a party or convention who can put us in contact with other people who help us find a direction that leads to success. But, we still need to apply ourselves. We still need to work hard. Find the mission. Set clear, action focused goals. Design a cool plan. Act relentlessly on that plan. And learn constantly. It's that simple and it's that hard. It's all a matter of focus and work. What dreams are you imagining? How can you make them come true? You'll need to know, because no one else is working on that for you. -- Doug Smith

Create Better Goals

How do you get better results? Create better goals. It's not all that you need but it's a great place to start. Whenever I create a goal that I find to be energizing that translates into more attention and action. Whenever I create a goal that has a noble outcome, I feel better about devoting resources to achieving it. Great goals are exciting. Great goals contain opportunity for growth. Great goals get you going. Here are what I believe to be the three key ingredients for great goals: ACTION WORD: The action word explains exactly what you will do. Create, make, deliver, teach, propel, design, change, sell, fabricate, transplant, modify, steer, obtain, tell, paint, draw, write...words like that. RESULT: The result is what you plan to achieve, usually expressed with some unit of measure. For example - a 200 word novel, 150 pounds, a graduate degree in chemistry, fifty new prospects, a year without crime, three healthy meals a day...whatever it is that you want to a...

Be Careful of Detours

How easily are you side-tracked? It's happened to me dozens of times: I have a great goal and a plan in place and then something comes along that completely derails my plan. I get distracted. Other people's ideas appear. Things come up. Every detour from your goals takes you further from achieving them. When distractions appear, find out what item is more closely aligned with your mission and work on that. If your goal was clearly and correctly written, it's probably that goal. If not, simply finish the distraction and redirect your attention to the plan. Because while plans change the more we work on them, they don't get done at all unless we do work on them. What's the next step in your most important goal's plan? -- Doug Smith Front Range Leadership:  Training Supervisors for Success doug smith training:  how to achieve your project goals

Follow Your Plan

Are you following the plan you set to achieve your most important goal? I've seen so many teams get the first two steps of goal achievement correct, setting a clear goal and developing a plan, only to fall short in the execution of their plan. I've done it myself. It takes discipline to stay with your plan. It takes dedication to act relentlessly on your plan. Yes, the plan will likely change. Steps and actions will be moved around and changed. Still, the plan is their to help you achieve that goal. How is it working? To achieve your goals, follow your plan. -- Doug Smith Front Range Leadership: Training Supervisors for Success doug smith training: how to achieve your project goals

Act On Your Goals

What are you doing for your top goal today? The key to an effective action plan is doing it: acting on your action plan. As obvious as that seems to me, there have been many times when I've set an appealing goal but failed to act on it. Goals, like bread and milk, have expiration dates. Those dates aren't stamped where you can read them easily, but they're there. When we let time tick away on our goals without taking actions to achieve them, they slip away. Sometimes they slip away unnoticed. Sometimes they slip away in tears. But, they slip away. We can do better than that. Let's do better than that! A goal is as good as its plan put into action. No better and no worse. Without that plan put into action, the expiration date comes and goes and another opportunity is lost. Let's put our plans into action today. What part of your best goal's action plan will you work on today? -- Doug Smith Front Range Leadership: Training Supervisors for Success ...

Focus On What's Important

Have you ever noticed that the people who need the most help with time management are really skilled at resisting any help with it? I've heard so many excuses that they would fill Lake Michigan, and most are so light they'd float on the top. They're light because they ARE excuses, and not reasons. That doesn't make them any easier to overcome. We fall in love with our reasons, even when others see them as excuses. We cling to our constraints as if they are holding us (body and soul) together. What's a person to do? How do you help that time-challenged performer become more productive? Even more important, how do you become more productive yourself when we all have our little clinging constraints holding us back? Goals are a way to help us focus on what is important. It all starts with the goals. When we set goals that are aligned with what is most important (our mission, our values, our expectations) they help us navigate the waves of procrastination, time...

Focus On Your Goals

Have you looked at your goals today? I encourage you to do that now, or perhaps right after reading this. Take a look at what you've defined as important. Do you still agree? Is that the best use of your time? Is your action plan getting you where you want to be? When we focus on our goals we tend to achieve them. Take a look. -- Doug Smith Front Range Leadership:  Training Supervisors for Success  doug smith training:  how to achieve your goals

Make Progress On Your Goals

Have you ever been so busy and distracted that the whole morning goes by without even knowing what you did in all that time? I've done it. One distraction leads to another. One fascination opens doors to new branches of a constantly blooming tree that's completely unrelated to the garden you're supposed to be cultivating. Time doesn't care how we spend it. How we spend it is up to us. To achieve our goals, we need to work on them. We need to relentless work our plan. Then, instead of wondering where our time when we can see: it went to achieving our goals. It went to working on our mission. It made us more productive and successful. It's a beautiful day when you make progress on your goals. Why not make some progress on one of them right now. Right. Now. -- Doug Smith Front Range Leadership:  Training Supervisors for Success doug smith training:  how to achieve your goals

Get Support for Your Goals

Who do you have helping you to achieve your goals? If you're anything like me, you are sometimes tempted (well, beyond tempted) to go for it all by yourself. But, there's a difference between sharply focused clear dedication and missing an opportunity to get valuable support. Sometimes when we enthusiastically talk about our goals people will just show up to help us. It's like magic. We don't have to wait for that magic, though. We can simply ask for the help that we need. Knowing how to achieve your goals is important. Getting the right support for them is critical. What support do you need? Who could help you today to move your biggest goal forward? Will you ask them to? -- Douglas Brent Smith Front Range Leadership:  Training Supervisors for Success doug smith training:  how to achieve your goals

Learn How To Achieve Your Goals

Do you have it all figured out? Last week I had a couple of people in one of my workshops who thought they had it all figured out. There was nothing left to learn. There were no tips or tricks or tools or techniques that could make their lives better. It was what it was and that's all there was to it. I feel sorry for them. They have doomed themselves to a life of overwhelm. Smug in their suffering they get to continue to suffer, like some technician stuck in the hellish hole of routine disaster. It doesn't have to be that way. It isn't that way at all. High performance leaders continue to learn. If you care about achieving your goals, you keep learning. New ways of doing things. New ways of improving your personal productivity. New ways of adjusting your perspective to a view that matters and helps. There's never been a perfect model for education but that's never prevented people from learning. Build your own model if you need to. Find one that works. But ...

Treat Your Goals Seriously

How many unachieved goals have you left behind? I'm not judging because I've left plenty of goals behind. Some deserved to be left behind. Some goals never made sense and never got the energy they needed to be achieved. But some -- some goals that were supposed to be important to me withered on the vine until they became untenable, unachievable, inedible. Don't you hate it when that happens? Treat your goals seriously and they'll payoff. Ignore them and well, they won't. What's your choice today? -- Douglas Brent Smith Learn more about what to do next on your goals in our webinar How To Achieve Your Goals.  Front Range Leadership  |   Fast, affordable leadership training

Stay Relentless and Flexible

Do your action plans ever weigh you down? I've been on projects where the action plans were so detailed, so precise, and so constricting that each task felt like a burden in my day. It took the fun right out of it. Yes, we do need detailed plans to achieve our goals. Yes, we do need to relentlessly follow our plans in order to overcome certain obstacles. But, we can have fun in the process. We can add our creativity. We can embrace new possibilities. We can improvise a new script when the old one seems stale. Goals are meant to give us more hope, not to chain us to a plan. When the plan slows us down, dance! Well, maybe not really dance. But I have been known to break into dance and noticed that it helps. Give Your Goals the Attention They Deserve

Do you have cool goals? Are they the kind of noble, life-changing goals that make you talk about them all the time? Sometimes. And, sometimes not if you're like most people. It's so easy to let go of goals even when we've been careful to craft them to our liking. Let's do this instead today -- let's pay attention to our goals. Let's make progress. Let's work toward achieving our goals instead of letting them slide into the background noise of a busy day. Give your goals the attention they need and deserve.
